How to type a square symbol

Windows

Hold Alt, type 254 on the number pad, then let go to get ■. Alt + 22 gives the rectangle ▬. Num Lock has to be on, and do not put a zero in front of the number.

No number pad? Press Windows key + . (period), click the Ω symbols tab and look under the geometric symbols.

Microsoft Word

Type the code and press Alt + X right after it: 25A0 for ■, 25A1 for □, 2610 for ☐ and 2611 for ☑.

Mac

Press Control + Command + Space, type “square” or “ballot box” in the search box and click the one you want.

Google Docs

Go to Insert > Special characters and search for “square”. For a list you can tick off, use the built-in checklist instead (see below).

Excel and Google Sheets

=UNICHAR(9632) gives ■ and =UNICHAR(9633) gives □. For checkboxes, =UNICHAR(9744) gives ☐ and =UNICHAR(9745) gives ☑.

In HTML, use ■ for ■ and □ for □. In CSS, use content: "\25A0";. In LaTeX with the amssymb package, \blacksquare gives ■ and \square gives □.

Checkbox symbols for lists and forms

☐ ☑ ☒ are text characters. They are great for printed forms, notes and plain-text lists, but you cannot click them to tick them off.

If you need a box that people can click, use the real feature in your app. In Word, turn on the Developer tab (File > Options > Customize Ribbon) and insert a Check Box Content Control. Why symbols sometimes show up as empty boxes

If you paste a symbol and see □ or a box with tiny numbers in it, the font on that device does not have the character. Font designers call these boxes “tofu”. Google even named its Noto fonts after the goal of “no more tofu”.

The fix is to use a more common symbol, or switch to a font with wider coverage like Segoe UI Symbol on Windows or Noto Sans. All the squares in our tool are widely supported, apart from the 🟥 🟦 emoji on very old phones.
