How to type a heart symbol

Windows

 • Alt code: hold Alt, type 3 on the number pad, then let go of Alt. You get ♥. Num Lock has to be on, and the number keys above the letters will not work for this.
 • Emoji panel: press Windows key + . (period), type “heart” and click the one you want. This is the easy way to get ❤️ and the colored hearts.
 • Microsoft Word: type 2665 and press Alt+X. Word turns the code into ♥. Use 2661 for ♡.

Mac

There is no single key for a heart on a Mac. Press Control + Command + Space (or the Globe/fn key + E on newer Macs) to open the emoji and symbols window. Type “heart” in the search box and click a heart to insert it.

iPhone and Android

Tap the smiley key on your keyboard and search “heart” to get the emoji hearts. For the text hearts ♥ and ♡, copy them from the tool above. On iPhone you can also add a shortcut in Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement, for example so that typing “hrt” turns into ♥.

Chromebook

Press Ctrl + Shift + U, type 2665, then press Space or Enter. You get ♥.

Excel and Google Sheets

Type =UNICHAR(9829) in a cell to get ♥. Use =UNICHAR(9825) for the outline heart ♡.

HTML and CSS

In HTML, write ♥ or ♥. In CSS, use content: "\2665";.

Heart symbol vs heart emoji

♥ and ❤️ look alike, but they do not behave the same way.

 • ♥ is a text symbol. It takes the color and font of the text around it, so it can be black, red or any color you set. It works in Word, email and plain text.
 • ❤️ is an emoji. It has its own red color and looks a little different on iPhone, Android and Windows. You cannot change its color.
 • ❤ (U+2764) sits in the middle. Most phones show it as the red emoji, while Word and many fonts show it as a plain black heart.

If you want a heart that matches your text color, use ♥ or ♡. If you want a bright red heart in a chat, use ❤️.

Which heart should you use?

 • ♥ Solid heart. The classic heart. It is also the hearts suit in playing cards, which is why its Unicode name is “black heart suit”.
 • ♡ Outline heart. Looks soft and cute in bios, captions and names.
 • ❥ and ❣ Decorative hearts. Good for notes, signatures and short lists. For plain list bullets, see our bullet point symbols.
 • ❦ and ❧ Floral hearts. An old printing ornament, also called a hedera or Aldus leaf. Nice as a divider between paragraphs.
 • 💕 💖 💗 💔 Emoji hearts. For texts and social posts. They show in color on phones.
 • ღ Not really a heart. It is the Georgian letter “ghan”. People use it as a heart because of its shape.

The text heart <3

Before emoji, people made a heart with two keys: <3. It is a sideways heart, where < is the point and 3 is the two curves. Some chat apps still turn <3 into a heart emoji when you send it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Alt code for the heart symbol?

The Alt code is Alt+3. Hold Alt and press 3 on the number pad to type ♥. There is no Alt code for ♡, so type 2661 and press Alt+X in Word, or copy it from this page.

Why does Alt+3 not work on my laptop?

Alt codes need a number pad with Num Lock turned on, and many laptops do not have one. Press Windows key + . (period) and search “heart”, or copy the heart from the tool above.

How do I type a heart on a Mac?

Press Control + Command + Space, type “heart” and click the heart you want. Mac keyboards have no built-in shortcut for ♥.

What is the HTML code for a heart?

Use ♥ or ♥ for ♥, and ♡ for ♡. Both work in every modern browser.

Is ♥ the same as the ❤️ emoji?

No. ♥ is U+2665, a text symbol that follows your text color. ❤️ is U+2764 plus a hidden emoji code (U+FE0F), so it shows as a red emoji and looks a bit different on each phone.

Can I use heart symbols in my Instagram bio?

Yes. Heart symbols are normal text, so you can paste them into your Instagram bio, your display name, a caption or a comment. Usernames are different: Instagram only allows letters, numbers, periods and underscores there.
