The code is the ISO 4217 code that banks and payment sites use. Bitcoin’s BTC is not an official ISO code, but everyone uses it. When a price could be confusing, like $ which is used by many countries, writing the code is clearer: 20 USD or 20 CAD.

Some signs are shared. In Pakistan, prices are usually written Rs 500, and ₨ is the same “Rs” joined into one character. The ¥ sign is used for both the Japanese yen and the Chinese yuan, so JPY or CNY tells them apart.

How to type currency symbols

Windows Alt codes

Hold Alt and type the number on the number pad.

SignAlt code
€Alt + 0128
£Alt + 0163 or Alt + 156
¥Alt + 0165 or Alt + 157
¢Alt + 0162 or Alt + 155
¤Alt + 0164

On many keyboards outside the US you can also press AltGr + E or Ctrl + Alt + E for €. Newer signs like ₹ ₩ ₽ and ₿ have no Alt code, so copy them from this page. Our Alt Code Finder lists every code that exists.

Mac

On the standard US keyboard: Option + Shift + 2 gives €, Option + 3 gives £, Option + Y gives ¥ and Option + 4 gives ¢. For others, press Control + Command + Space and search for the currency name. See our Mac symbols guide.

Microsoft Word

Type the code and press Alt + X: 20AC for €, 00A3 for £, 20B9 for ₹, 20A9 for ₩, 20BD for ₽ and 20BF for ₿. Word also has a built-in shortcut for the euro: Ctrl + Alt + E.

Excel and Google Sheets

For prices in a spreadsheet, do not type the sign into each cell. In Excel, select the cells, open Format Cells > Number > Currency and pick a symbol from the list. In Google Sheets, use Format > Number > Custom currency. The numbers stay real numbers, so your totals still work.

For a sign on its own, =UNICHAR(8364) gives € and =UNICHAR(8377) gives ₹.

HTML

Named codes exist for the common ones: € gives €, £ gives £, ¥ gives ¥ and ¢ gives ¢. For the rest, use the number, like ₹ for ₹ or ₿ for ₿.

Before or after the number?

It depends on the country. In the US, the UK and Ireland the sign goes before the number with no space: $10, £10, €10. In much of Europe, like Germany, France and Spain, it goes after the number with a space: 10 €. When you write for an international audience, pick one style and use it everywhere in the same text.

The cent sign ¢ always goes after the number, as in 99¢, and it is mostly used in the US and Canada for small amounts.

Why some currency signs show as boxes

Many currency signs are quite new. The Indian rupee sign ₹ was introduced in 2010, the Turkish lira sign ₺ in 2012, the ruble sign ₽ in 2013 and the Bitcoin sign ₿ was added to Unicode in 2017. Older phones and fonts may not have them yet and show an empty box instead. If that matters, write the code, like INR or BTC, next to the amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Alt code for the euro sign?

Alt + 0128 on the number pad. On many non-US keyboards, AltGr + E also works.

How do I type the pound sign £ on a US keyboard?

On Windows, press Alt + 0163. On a Mac, press Option + 3. Note that Shift + 3 on a US keyboard gives #, which some Americans also call the pound sign.

What is the symbol for the Pakistani rupee?

Most people write Rs, as in Rs 1,000. The single character ₨ means the same thing, and the code is PKR.

Is ¥ the yen or the yuan?

Both. Japan and China use the same sign. Write JPY for yen or CNY for yuan when it needs to be clear.

Is there a symbol for Bitcoin?

Yes, ₿ (U+20BF). It was added to Unicode in 2017, so very old devices may not show it.
