Use ✗ or ✘ to mark something wrong or not done. Use ☒ for a crossed-out checkbox in plain text. The script X symbols (🗴 🗷) are newer additions to Unicode, so some older devices show them as an empty box.

How to type an X mark

In Microsoft Word

• Type 2717 and press Alt+X right after it. Word turns it into ✗. Use 2718 for ✘ and 2612 for ☒.
• Quick shortcut: change the font to Wingdings 2 and press Shift+O.

In Excel

• Select a cell, press Shift+O, then change the font to Wingdings 2.
• Or use a formula: =UNICHAR(10007) gives ✗ in Excel 2013 and newer.

In Google Docs and Sheets

• Docs: go to Insert → Special characters, then search “ballot x” or draw the mark.
• Sheets: =UNICHAR(10007) works here too.

On Windows (any app)

• Press Windows key + . (period) to open the emoji panel, then type “cross” to find ❌ ❎ ✖️.
• There is no Alt code for ✗. But Alt+0215 on the number pad types the multiplication sign ×, which looks like a small x.

On Mac

• Press Control+Command+Space to open the Character Viewer, search “x mark” or “ballot”, and double-click the one you want.

On iPhone and Android

• Open the emoji keyboard and search “cross” or “x” for ❌ ❎ ✖️.
• For the plain ✗, copy it once from this page and save it as a text shortcut. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement.

In HTML, CSS and LaTeX

• HTML: ✗ or ✗ for ✗, and × for ×.
• CSS: content: "\2717";
• LaTeX: \ding{55} for ✗ (needs the pifont package), or \times for × in math.

✗ vs × vs ❌: which one should you use?

✗ and ✘ are ballot X symbols. They are made for lists, forms and “wrong” marks, and they take the color of the text around them.

× is the multiplication sign. Use it in math and for sizes, like 1920 × 1080 or a 4 × 6 photo. It is better than typing the letter x.

❌ is an emoji. It shows as a red X on most phones, and its look changes between Apple, Google and Microsoft. Use it in chats and social posts, not in formal documents.

What does an X mark mean?

An X mark usually means no, wrong, cancel or not done. You see it next to wrong answers, on close buttons and in pro and con lists. On UK ballot papers, voters put an X in the box next to their choice. On maps, “X marks the spot” shows a place. In Japan, an X (called batsu) means wrong, while a circle means correct.

Is there an Alt code for the X mark?

Not for ✗ itself. Alt+0215 types ×, the multiplication sign, which is the closest match. In Word, type 2717 and then press Alt+X instead.

What is the HTML code for an X mark?

Use ✗ or ✗ for ✗, ✘ for ✘, and × for ×.

Why does ❌ look different on my phone?

❌ is an emoji, and every company draws its own emoji. It is the same symbol, just a different design on iPhone, Android and Windows.

How do I put an X in a box in Word?

For a plain symbol, type 2612 and press Alt+X to get ☒. For a box you can click, turn on the Developer tab, add a Check Box Content Control, and in Properties change the checked symbol to an X.

Is the X mark the same as the letter X?

No. The letter x is part of the alphabet. ✗ and ✘ are separate symbols made for marking, and × is a math sign. They look alike, but search engines and screen readers treat them differently.
